Extreme Tutorial Addendum 3 by PhiTuS Extreme Tutorial Addendum 3 by PhiTuS
As I watch people draw, I learn more from THEIR mistakes. And so should you!

These are based on real life fighting techniques and your character had better look like he or she knows how to fight.

If not, my character will come over and school yours. And it will hurt.

Edit: made the red poses look even weaker.

Are you a fighter yourself? You seem to know a lot about self defense.

Well I took taekwondo back in the day and learned about MMA techniques from Bas Rutten's videos.

Though not so much with actual fighting experience...

Cool! Maybe that's not exactly a bad thing, considering how crazy people are.

"it starts all the way from the feet"
my understanding was that the hips were the drivers.

you might want to talk about keyframing for non-animators...like choosing the right point in the punch to draw- the extreme extension? or the contact?

Well then what drives the hips? The legs. Assuming you're doing stand-up striking of course. If you got the opponent grounded, you can't use any of your lower body to punch him.

I'm pretty sure I already explained that in this: [link] and even this: [link]

the legs drag...think about it. super strong punch with no step-

the hip twists, and the foot might drag a little- then the shoulder drags, then the arm whips through with the shoulder.

Also, MMA heavyweight champion Bas Rutten says so: [link]

I believe he knows what he's talking about.

whatever, man. it's what i was taught, it's what i've heard from other serious martial artists, and it seems to work. alright, let's have a look at these links...

okay, this rutten dude is an MMA fighter. from what i've seen of MMA, strikes, especially punches, are shockers and precursers- mainly towards a wrestling finish. if you punch someone ONCE. PROPERLY, with a board-breaker- they do not get up. a strong punch from the hips breaks bones, shatters skulls. there's no show in that though, and you definetely couldn't televise it.

the strength he's talking about in terms of legs as a push-off is more to do with weight distribution- you can't lean forward or throw your weight around on one leg, or with bad footing. makes sense, and footing's important for any technique- but it's not where the power in a strong punch (or a strong anything) comes from- it's the twisting action at the hip that moves the upper body. when he's talking about turning the upper body to gain power, you'll notice that his hips are driving it. the hip turns which forces the upper body to turn. if i wasn't so busy right now, i'd animate an example.

think about a strong kick. the hip leads and the foot flies out- the upper body provides counterbalance or whatever. a punch is like the reverse. hip leads, arm flies out, legs are support.

but hey, there's lots of different ways to throw a punch, i guess.

Bas Rutten is primarily a striker. Which I'm sure means he aims to finish the fight by knocking the other dude unconscious. And believe me, people have gotten knocked out pretty fucking fast in MMA. Jose Aldo once ended a fight with a flying double knee combo in mere seconds into the fight. That's all it took. I think the guy broke his orbital bone.

Uh yeah, the hips can turn because you have legs. If you don't have legs, you can't turn your hips. The entire reason you can even use your hips is because of the legs. Therefore, the power originates from the legs. LEGS LEGS LEGS.

The hips leads in a strong kick when you step into it. Stepping = legs. LEGS.

and there was a local guy who took one shot to the head and died in a coma. i've smashed boards that are harder than ribs- it's really not hard to semi-permanently maim someone in a couple of seconds if you know what you're doing...i hate to be the one to tell you, but MMA's not real.

euuuungh. allright, once more. the legs don't provide turning motion. it's pretty straightforward. they compensate and allow it, but the driving motion is at that central powerhouse. if your footing's nice and wide, you don't need to step, but there's disadvantages to that, too.

Alright, that's a bit ridiculous. It is real in that people are really getting injured, but I'm pretty sure you mean they're not like street fights when you can do the "illegal" shit. If that's what you mean by them not being real then OKAAAYY FIIIINNNEE, they're not "real" fights.

Alright whatever. You and your technicalities.

Ok, I don't even know what you just said there.

Isn't the entire reason your hips are twisting is because you HAVE legs? Try punching while sitting on a chair with your legs off the ground and see if your hips can help you then.

Look, it even says that you "punch with your legs" here: [link] and here: [link] and here: [link] and here: [link] and so on. I could go on, if you want.

I agree with this, but there's something I'd like to add to the first part:

The pullback is just as important as the punch. Your punching arm isn't the only one doing all the action, the other arm has to pull back towards its corresponding hip to provide that pivoting momentum your punching arm will need.

Ah, good point. Thanks for elaborating.

It goes along with the point I stated in the kick section.

I think on the seccond one the Red guy still looks like he's throwing a mighty powerful punch. Likely due to the size of his arm.
